Reasons For Having Flowers In A Home

Flowers have been a part of man's existence from time immemorial. Frescoes, paintings, sculptures, and pottery from Greek, Asian, Minoan, and Chinese origins all have flowers in them. Flowers represent spring, blessings, fertility and growth.

Experts reveal that flowers spread peace and happiness. A study at Harvard showed that:
  • Fresh cut flowers in a home increased feelings of compassion and kindness for others.
  • Flowers in a home spread calm and chase away moments of anxiety, worries, and sadness.
  • People who live among flowers experience less negativity and have lowered hypertension and anxiety.
  • Flowers boost energy levels and productivity. People with flowers in a home are more enthusiastic and happy. They are willing to help others and are more active.
Studies show that flowers heal the sick and bring smiles to the faces of the aging. Flowers have appositive effect on our well being and alleviate feelings of anxiety and depression.

That is why it is important to grow flowers in a garden or small patch. If you live in a flat, have flowers in small pots or window boxes. Watch them flourish and dance with music and wind.

Put cut flowers in vases in your kitchen, dining areas, and living areas. If you suffer from pollen allergies, get flowers that are safe for you. Flowers can last a week or longer if you change the water everyday and trim the dead leaves.

Flowers bring a touch of spring into homes. In fact, people believe that homes with flowers have fewer fights, bouts of sickness, or unhappiness. It does not have to be enormous or expensive. Just a single stem surrounded by greens will make a difference.
Beautifully arranged flowers make the room look stylish and bring sunshine into the home and drive away the gloom. Flowers in a room brighten up the smallest room and make people, children and adults feel welcome.

A Guide to Choosing the Right Flowers - Floral India

The beauty of flowers is that they're so versatile – it's hard to think of an occasion when they aren't an appropriate gift and let's face it, if you're stuck for a gift idea, flowers are always a reliable fall-back solution. The only problem is that for most of us the world of flowers can be a mysterious and daunting one; not everyone is blessed with a florist's expertise so knowing what to choose can be a bit of a challenge.

For those who don't necessarily fancy themselves as a budding Alan Titchmarsh, don't be put off. Well chosen flowers really are a great way of expressing a whole range of sentiments from gratitude to congratulations to love. So have a look at the following tips and hopefully you'll feel a bit more confident about choosing the right flowers to say exactly what you want to say.

Romance – If you're trying to woo someone or perhaps hoping to inject a bit of good old fashioned romance and spontaneity into your relationship or marriage, flowers are still one of the most effective tools of seduction. The obvious choice here are roses, the red rose in particular is still associated with love (it's traditionally symbolic of passionate love) more than any other flower and as such still makes a good, classic choice. For something a bit different though there are plenty of attractive alternatives – Lilies, Daisies, Orchids and Wildflowers for instance are all associated with conveying a message of love.

Congratulations – Obviously you're looking to express something of the celebratory spirit here so consider going for bold, bright and contrasting colors that you feel really communicate a sense of fun and playfulness.

Thank you – One of the most common sentiments behind floral gifts - flowers are ideal for expressing gratitude. There aren't really any definitive rules here; the most important thing is that they convey a sense of sincerity and perhaps feel like you've put some personal thought into your choice. A casually arranged selection of some complementary flowers of your choice should be fine. Pink carnations are traditionally the floral symbol of gratitude.

I'm sorry – There are few more consistently effective ways of getting out of the dog house than with flowers, somehow a floral gift makes it almost impossible for anyone to hold a grudge for too much longer. Go for arrangements of delicate warm tones and put a bit of thought into an accompanying note.

Get well Flowers can convey a sense of deeply felt empathy so they make the perfect gift to let someone know your thinking of them. Ultimately what flowers you choose will come down to a personal decision but you could bare in mind a couple of possible approaches: You could go down a couple of different routes here. Either stick with something restrained and tastefully serene or why not go for a more positive, uplifting message with a bold, vibrant arrangement.

Science and Nature Unearth New Insights into Emotional Health Rutgers Behavioral Study Links Flowers and Life Satisfaction

With today's high-tech and fast-paced lifestyle taking its daily toll on our lives, experts advise exercise and other personal lifestyle changes to relieve stress. According to recent behavioral research conducted at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, nature provides us with a simple way to improve emotional health - flowers. The presence of flowers triggers happy emotions, heightens feelings of life satisfaction and affects social behavior in a positive manner far beyond what is normally believed.

"What's most exciting about this study is that it challenges established scientific beliefs about how people can manage their day-to-day moods in a healthy and natural way," said Jeannette Haviland-Jones, Ph. D., Professor of Psychology at Rutgers and lead researcher on the study.

Research Findings
A team of researchers explored the link between flowers and life satisfaction in a 10-month study of participants' behavioral and emotional responses to receiving flowers. The results show that flowers are a natural and healthful moderator of moods.
  1. Flowers have an immediate impact on happiness. All study participants expressed "true" or "excited" smiles upon receiving flowers, demonstrating extraordinary delight and gratitude. This reaction was universal, occurring in all age groups.
  2. Flowers have a long-term positive effect on moods. Specifically, study participants reported feeling less depressed, anxious and agitated after receiving flowers, and demonstrated a higher sense of enjoyment and life satisfaction.
  3. Flowers make intimate connections. The presence of flowers led to increased contact with family and friends. "Common sense tells us that flowers make us happy," said Dr. Haviland-Jones. "Now, science shows that not only do flowers make us happier than we know, they have strong positive effects on our emotional well being."
Forget the fountain of youth, new scientific research proves flowers help senior citizens cope with the challenges of aging. Click here to find out more.

Sharing Space
The study also explored where in their homes people display flowers. The arrangements were placed in areas of the home that are open to visitors - such as foyers, living rooms and dining rooms - suggesting that flowers are a symbol for sharing.

"Flowers bring about positive emotional feelings in those who enter a room," said Dr. Haviland-Jones. "They make the space more welcoming and create a sharing atmosphere."

Background
The Emotional Impact of Flowers Study was conducted by Jeannette M. Haviland-Jones, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology, Project Director, Human Development Lab at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. Dr. Haviland-Jones is a psychologist and internationally recognized authority in the role of emotional development in human behavior and nonverbal emotional signals and response.

The research adds a scientific foundation to what many consider to be common knowledge - that flowers have a strong, beneficial impact on those who receive them. The Society of American Florists worked in cooperation with the Rutgers research team, bringing an expertise of flowers to the project.

How to Express your Deepest Sympathy with Flowers

Floral IndiaFlowers are a beautiful way to show sympathy to a friend or family member for the passing of a loved one as well as saying those hard, final good byes. Flowers can say more than words at times when the right words for expressing the heart's true feelings are lost, or just too difficult. Because families are so spread out these days, funeral services have become shorter and smaller, or do not happen at all. Flowers are still appropriate to be sent to the funeral homes, or to the home of the bereaved. They offer comfort during this hard time and give sad, lost eyes a direction. Memories of the loved one can be triggered by beautiful flower arrangements allowing for laughter and smiles rather than having sorrow and tears only.

With cremations on the rise in the INDIA, memorial services are often shortened, or do not happen at all. Many people are unsure whether it would be appropriate to send flowers when a loved one has been cremated. Showing the family of the deceased that they are thought of in their time of need is always appropriate. Flower arrangements or food baskets are a great way to show support. Flowers can be sent to the funeral home if there is a service, or to the home of the bereaved. Always remember to put a name and address on the card so that the family knows whom to thank. Sending flowers as a group is a way to pull all funds together and create a magnificent piece that stands out among the other flowers. Sympathy cards allow for abundant names, but only include one name and address so that the bereaved knows where to send thanks. Showing support or how much the deceased touched the lives of the senders will be greatly appreciated. In some cases, the family may request charity rather than flowers. Still, there are not many people who want a service completely flowerless, so sending flowers is still appropriate. Showing one's sympathy with flowers or a food basket in good taste is always appropriate.

Flower arrangements to show sympathy should be original, personal, and creative. They should be gentle and soothing, yet deeply expressive. Symbolizing with flowers the deceased person's personality, his or her interests, or the sender's personal relationship with the deceased expresses the true feelings of the sender. The family is sure to recognize this gesture and appreciate it. For the family, a personal item from the deceased can be accented by flowers and laid over the casket as a spray. Depending regionally, religiously, or culturally, casket sprays, pillows, flower arrangements, flower baskets, and stands are given. The family, or very close friends usually give casket sprays and pillows, and friends and family usually give stands, flower arrangements, and baskets. Many people search for something different and with a less funeral look. This way the family has the option of taking the flowers home, or donating them to a church, hospital, or nursing home.

Casket sprays are elaborate sprays of flowers generally laid over the casket. Smaller sprays on the casket as symbols of love from children are a loving, meaningful touch. Casket pillows need to be small, but deeply expressive. Stands are sprays of flowers, and can be in the shapes of hearts, crosses, or wreaths. These types of arrangements should be sent to the funeral home rather than to the home of the bereaved. Flower arrangements and baskets can be sent to either place.

Displaying sympathy with seasonal flowers is always appropriate. The flowers can be simple, yet elegant. Using fresh flowers rather than silk is a reminder of life's beauty and its endless cycle. Plant baskets generally last longer and the individual flower can be removed and given out after the service. The sender should choose an arrangement that has a looser feel, rather than stiff. The arrangement should be free of hard edges and angles. This adds sensitivity to the arrangement, and a round shape shows a sense of stability and comfort. If known, the favorite colors and flowers of the deceased should be used. For the casket sprays, the casket colors and what the deceased will be wearing should be taken in to consideration.

Most flowers are appropriate, but some flowers and their colors have personal or archetypal meanings. How the sender feels about the bereaved or the deceased comes out in the arrangement. Red carnations are classic funeral flowers as well as they are beautiful and affordable. Roses have timelessly portrayed emotion's depth more than any other flower. Spring flowers give a message of hope. As mentioned earlier, the Chrysanthemum is associated with death and funerals.

Some people shy away from vibrant colors for a funeral because they feel that it would not be appropriate. In fact, a memorial and a funeral are celebrations of the deceased person's life as well as a time to say good-bye. Vibrant, tasteful colors are extremely appropriate. They show how much the deceased touched the sender's life. Reds are a passionate color representing a deep love. Softer orange hues respect and admire a loved one. White flowers are a classic funeral color representing sympathy, love and sorrow.

For most religions, seasonal flowers are acceptable. For the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormon), flowers arranged in the shape of a cross or crucifix are NOT acceptable. The Islamic church uses a lot of palm branches and green foliage for the grave. They do not have a tradition for flowers, yet perfumed flowers, like roses, are acceptable. The Buddhist church accepts flowers, but usually prefer them to be white.

How Some of Our Traditions Started - FloralIndia

Cakes:

  • Greeks used to take cakes to the temple of the goddess of the moon, Artemis. Round cakes were used to represent the full moon.
  • Germans made Geburtstagorten, a cake used for birthdays.

Candles:

  • Greeks put candles on the round cakes they brought to Artemis because it represented the glowing moon.
  • Germans were known for candle making, making small candles for their cakes.
  • Some Germans used one large candle in the center of the cake to represent the "light of life."
  • Smoke from fires would carry their wishes to heaven. (wishing as they blow out the candle)
  • Blowing out all candles at once to bring good luck (rather than to grant the wish to come true as many believe today.)

Cards

  • The tradition of sending birthday cards started in England about 100 years ago (Motomora, 1989).

Luck

  • Good luck birthstone, flower, or colors are often given as gifts to give good luck on a birthday.

"Happy Birthday to you..."

  • The traditional song used to celebrate birthdays was written by two sisters in 1893 (Mildred and Patty Hill). Originally it was written as "Good morning to you..." but then changed to "Happy Birthday to you..."

Birthday Customs around the world:

  • Japan used to celebrate all Birthdays on Jan. 1, but today, most Japanese celebrate on their true birth dates.
  • In Korea the most important birthday is the first birthday. The child is dressed in special clothes and displayed in front of a large gathering of friends and family members. They feast and leave money for the 1 year old. The child's future is told by the items he/she picks up.
  • In China and with India's maharajahs, reaching 60 years gains respect for that person having made it the first cycle of life.
  • Germany is believed to be where many of our common birthday traditions started such as cakes, parties, and blowing out candles.
  • Mexicans have piñatas filled with candies and treats shaped as animals or stars, a tradition over 300 years old.
  • Many countries name children after saints. They celebrate their birthdays on that saint's day. The main focus is on the saint on that day, the birthday celebration is secondary.

Preserving Flowers -Floral India

It is great to get the gift of flowers, and when you do a lot of times it is for a very meaningful situation. If you got flowers for a birthday or an anniversary or just for any occasion and you want to save them, learn how you can dry and preserve your flowers. There are many different ways that you can do this. Find out what option will work best for the flowers you have, and preserve the memories forever. There are a few different ways that you can preserve them through pressing and drying the flowers.

To dry flowers you can generally do it one of two ways. The easiest way is to usually hang the flowers. When you hang them, you want to tie them upside down and let them dry. If it is a larger bouquet, you will want to take it apart into a few smaller bunches, so that they will dry quicker and more evenly. Otherwise, you can also air dry the flowers. A window screen works well for this, as it allows air to circulate around the flowers. Place them in a simple layer and let them dry out. This will generally take a week or so. Either one of these are great ways to get those flowers dried out so that you can save them for later.
Another way to preserve flowers is to press them. There are flower presses that you can purchase that works more like a vice and squeezes the different layers together to get a great press. You can press them in between a book if you don’t have a flower press, just be sure that you are layering it with something, so put the petals in between parchment paper or waxed paper and it will help keep them safe once they are pressed. This is also a great way to save them, and when you press flowers you can use them to put in scrapbooks and other things.
Other people like to turn their flowers into potpourri. To make potpourri, you need to first dry out the flowers. You will either want to hang them, air dry them, or press them. Once you’ve done that you want to be very careful not to break the petals, otherwise there will be no point in using them. Once you have dried the flowers how you want to, you’ll need to add essential oils, spices and herbs. This will help make everything smell great. From here, put it wherever you want it to and watch the smells fill the room.
Keeping your flowers as a keepsake is pretty common. There are a few different ways that you can do this. Whether you are going to press them or dry them or even turn them into potpourri, you can keep them around for much longer than the flowers will last alive. Save special occasion flowers and use them to make keepsakes, put them in scrapbooks, and much more. Don’t just toss out flowers after you get them.
